The Bohemian
kingdom was familiar with the Austrian – and because of our belonging to the
Holy Roman Empire, general German – titles. Some of them had Bohemized
synonyms or respelling, e.g. “Kurfürst” (English: count palatine) was
translated as “kurfiřt”, a guy capable of voting the Holy Roman Emperor.
Similarly, “falckrabě” was the Czech name for Pfalzgraf and “vévoda” was
the Czech word for “Herzog” (the equivalent in the Balkans was “vojvoda”).

Just to be sure, a noble title was required
after 1848 to sit in the Parliament. In 1918, Czechoslovakia was born as a
republic and aristocratic titles were banned. They were re-allowed during the
Nazi occupation, 1939–1945, and banned again in 1945. The ban formally still
holds but after the 1989 fall of communism, no one is ever punished for using
the titles.
